Palmer’s Grand Opening in 1921-Joseph and R.J. Palmer

Palmer’s Grand Opening in 1921 • L to R: Joseph and R.J. Palmer

Five Generations of loyal customer service

Palmer’s Market traces its roots back to the early 1900’s when R.J. Palmer opened up a small butcher shop on Davenport Street in Stamford. In 1921, he relocated the business to the growing community of Darien and expanded it to include groceries. In 1936, R.J. Palmer retired and his son Joseph Palmer took over the business.

The store continued to grow in sales and reputation; however in the early 1950’s the construction of I-95 forced Palmer's Market to relocate to their current location in Noroton Heights. Following in their father’s footsteps, Joseph's three sons Rocco, Joseph and Alphonse all stepped in to help out with the family business. The new 24,000 square foot store was much larger than the original, but the Palmer brothers made sure that it retained the same friendly, small store feel that everyone has grown to love.

Today Palmer’s is run by cousins Greg Palmer and Cindy Palmer Dean who are both fourth generation and under whom the store has continued to thrive. In 1999, the store received a beautiful renovation and over the past 10 years has grown to include a gourmet kitchen, gift department and flower shop.

In 2008 a scratch bakery was also opened onsite and is run by fifth generation Megan Palmer Dean. For almost 90 years, the Palmer family has been serving the community of Darien, Stamford, Norwalk, and other Fairfield County towns.
